Don't Forget to Mix It Up!!

We all need a variety of reading materials! Mix it up and find what works for your child.
HELP YOUR CHILD PICK A "JUST RIGHT" BOOK. 1. Preview the book. Is the subject material appropriate for his/her age? 2. Discuss the book topic. Is your child interested? 3. Read a page..... how many words do they need to stop and sound out? 5 or more- too hard! 4. Have your child tell you what the paragraph was about. Do they understand? If not- too hard. 5. Check vocabulary..... do they know the words? Remember- reading for pleasure should be only slightly challenging. The student should learn some new words, but not need to stop on every page to ask for help. Books that are too hard or beyond maturity level become an unpleasant experience. Books that are "just right" make for a pleasurable reading experience that you want to repeat!
